How To Keep Your Dog Cool In The Scorching Summer Heat

The heat of summer is even harder on our pets. While you may not think Fido minds the heat, soaring temperatures can lead to heatstroke. That’s why it’s essential that you learn to protect your dog from the hot summer temperatures. Whether that means keeping your dog hydrated or trimming his fur, you can make small changes that will make a big difference.

Keep Your Dog Hydrated

It’s extremely important to make sure your dog has plenty of fresh water at all times, especially when the temperatures are high. You must also keep in mind that outdoor water dishes may go bone dry due to evaporation. Even indoor dogs will need more water during the hot summer months. A quick trip outdoors to potty can result in a large drink of water.

Protect the Paws

Imagine walking barefoot on hot summer asphalt. Sounds unbearable, doesn’t it? Think about your poor dog’s paws! Keep those paws protected by slipping summer booties onto your dog’s feet. You can find petsupplies for dogs, especially items like this, in a lot of pet specialty stores.

Go for a Swim

A swim can certainly keep your dog cool in the summer heat, but always supervise your dog. Never allow your dog near a pool when you’re not there to watch. Also, never allow an overheated dog to jump into a pool. This can cause shock.

Stay in the Shade

Shade is essential for hot summer days. If your dog live outdoors, make sure he has a shady spot to lay. It even helps to move the doghouse into the shade. If you’re going to the park, or some other outdoor place, be sure to choose a shady spot to relax with your dog.

Bring Your Dog Indoors

If the weather is too hot, bring your door indoors. A heatstroke can be fatal to your dog. During extreme heatwaves, always bring your dog indoors. Even if it’s just the laundry room or the bathroom that can easily be cleaned. Above all NEVER leave your dog in a parked car for any amount of time!

Limit Exercise

Walks should be during the early morning and late evening hours. Walking your dog during the hottest part of the day can be dangerous for both you and your dog. These hours are also the best time to play with your dog. Never over exert your dog during the hottest part of the day.

Trim with Caution

Trimming your dog can be a good or bad idea. Some dogs, such as Pomeranians can actually have a heatstroke when their fur is trimmed too short. Their coat protects them from the cold AND the heat. Read about your breed before trimming.
