Visit the Waterfalls
You will not be able to visit all of North Carolina’s 300 waterfalls, but you can set out to visit a few. You will find waterfalls in Transylvania County in the Blue Ridge Mountains, and in the Nantahala National Forest. The Dry Falls is also amazing but it is one of the few falls that will let you walk behind it on an unobstructed ledge.
Blue Ridge Parkway
No trip to the mountains will be complete without a drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway to take in the spectacular views. Take a drive or walk the trails, either way you’ll get a firsthand look at all the marvelous views that this area has to offer. Looking Glass Rock
Walk the well-marked trail at Looking Glass Rock. The hike will take you about 1700 feet in three miles, but once you get to the top you’ll see that it’s definitely worth the experience. From that point you’ll be able to see Mount Pisgah and other nearby peaks.
Roan Mountain
The pink blooms of the rhododendron flowers on Roan Mountain are a sight to behold in early summer. The acres of these tall flowers really present an impressive sight when viewed from Carver’s Gap. The Rhododendron Garden and Round Bald are other places you can see the flowers in blooms.
Blowing Rock
One of the state’s oldest attractions, Blowing Rock is a gigantic cliff from which you can view Grandfather Mountain, Hawksbill Mountain and Table Rock. It is the place where you can see rain and snow fall upside down caused by the wind blowing up from the valley below.
Chimney Rock
You don’t have to be a world champion climber to get to the top of Chimney Rock. You can climb the 400 stairs or take the elevator (which is a lot less fun). You won’t be disappointed when you get to the top and get a wonderful view of Lake Lure and Hickory Nut Gorge.
Spot the Shadow of the Bear
The Shadow of the Bear is only visible twice a year during the spring and the fall. You’ll have to find the ideal viewing spot somewhere along Rhodes Big View Overlook, where you can see the bear like shadow on Whiteside Mountain. Tour guides in the area will be able to provide more information, so that you can properly time your visit.
Great Smoky Mountains National Park
