One of the biggest FA Cup upsets ever?
One of the greatest FA-CUP final ends upsetting the modern times and could possibly be the end game for Roberto Mancini.
Roberto-Martinez’s team had been in superb form throughout the tournament it’s been no smash and grab victory for them.
Ben-Watson’s winner in the stoppage time takes Wigan to an eccentric victory.
It’s been the first piece of silverware for them in their club history.
They have beaten one of the most financially-endowed club in the world.
Last Minute Saviour
Watson had been in the pitch as an 81st minute substitute minutes before Pablo Zabaleta added his name to the tally of footballers who have been red carded in FA-Cup final.
He had been booked earlier for taking down Shaun Maloney in total flight.
Watson proved decisive as Maloney swung a corner and his header from it flashed across Joe Hart creating history.
Wigan had played a thronging game. Maloney was such a clever and elusive opponent always searching for space and driving the ball forward.
He took the game away from Manchester City in the opening stages.
But he was never alone as Macmanaman and Roger-Espionza the left back form Honduras always tried and broke forward to supplement-the attack.
Jordi Gomez even played with greater poise and intelligence on the pitch.
Misshaped City
City found it difficult to hold the unorthodox formation of 3-4-1-2 as the team with two centre forwards Arouna Kone and Mcmanaman who started with wider positions but drifted in as the game progressed.
Macmanaman had missed a superb early chance form Kone’s thorugh which he should have let fly with his right-foot but ended up with a curling left foot shot wide past harmlessly.
Again, a similar chance was missed by him shooting staright-at-Zabaleta just when Wembley was going to witness a modern day-Ricky -Villa-moment.
Wigan had begun the game in such a manner that they could not be bereaved as the virtual no hopers.
City might have threatened some minutes in the first half but they were lucky enough to escape with a 0-0 draw at the interval as their rivals could not finish any of their beautifully build up play.
Its not that Mancini’s were unable to create chances but Wigan’s goalkeeper Joel Robles denied a superb shot of Yaya Toure from Carlos Tevez’s freekick rebound off the wall and also palmed-away a long raging shot from Samir Nasri and a even better save to deny Carlos Tevez before the half hour by jutting out his right foot to fly the ball over the cross bar from David Silva’s cross.
2nd Half
The second half started with a higher tempo with Sergio Aguero trying to squeeze in from a Carlos Tevez’s cross.
Still, there were signs of unusual carelessness from Roberto Mancini’s side with David Silva struggling to show an impact.
Sergio Aguero tried diving in to win a penalty of a Paul Scharner’s challenge but failed to draw the refree’s attention.
Mancini had brought in another mid fielder in James Rodwell accompanying David Silva for pushing further forward but it had a very tiny effect and it was Martinez’s men who-had-the-last-word.
Mancini’s Future
Mancini had been rifted apart with the reappointment news of mangerialship behind his back, the new manager from Malaga Manuel Pellegrini has been thought as an option.
The goal by Watson may accelerate this process.
