Believe it or not, there’s more to buying a piece of jewelry than just walking into a jewelry store looking at the pieces in stock and opening your wallet. Sure, that’s a nice fantasy, but if the jewelry you’re buying costs significant dollars, you want to make sure that it’s going to fit in with your current jewelry and clothing wardrobe. What’s the sense of buying a piece of jewelry that, even though it’s beautiful, can’t be worn with any of your clothing or your other jewelry?
Look at Your Clothing
The style of your clothing, whether dramatic, casual, or classic, has a lot to do with the types of jewelry you’ll buy and wear. If you wear mainly dramatic clothing, sedate jewelry, such as a strand of white pearls or white diamond earrings will look good with it. But those jewels won’t look their best paired with your dramatic clothing. If, on the other hand, the necklace you’re looking at is striking and dramatic and you wear casual clothing, the two styles will class, not looking very attractive.
Do you wear blouses, shells, and sweaters? Skirts and blazers? Slacks? Dress pumps and sandals? Or do you wear brightly colored, tribal clothing, for instance? This has a lot to do with the types of jewelry you should be selecting.
Check Out Your Jewelry
Now, look at the jewelry you already own. Look at the necklaces and earrings. Go through your bracelets. Compare that to the piece of jewelry you saw at the jewelry store. If your jewelry consists of brightly colored gemstones, large stones and dramatic settings, that diamond tennis bracelet, though undeniably beautiful, won’t coordinate well with what you already own.
If a dramatic pair of earrings with turquoise and feathers caught your attention, but you don’t own any bracelets or necklaces that would coordinate well with that pair of earrings, you won’t be able to wear them with anything you already own. This means that, when you wear those earrings, that’s the only piece of jewelry you’ll be wearing.
Look at Color Coordination
Your clothing is composed mainly of neutrals, whites, blacks and a few of your favorite colors. The piece of jewelry you saw is set with several bright gemstones, such as pink sapphires, garnets, or emeralds. Close your eyes and think of how that necklace would pair up with your clothing.
On the flip side of the coin, if your wardrobe is made up of brightly colored clothing, you may be able to pull off a tennis bracelet set with white diamonds, but a different type of bracelet would coordinate better. Depending on the look you want to achieve, you’ll need to decide if you can live with the look that bracelet and your clothing would give you, or if you want your jewelry and clothing to coordinate more closely.
Decide How Much You Like the Jewelry
How much do you like the piece of jewelry you saw in the display case? If you like it so much that you want to buy it even though it won’t coordinate very well with what you already own, you’ll have to find the pieces of jewelry and clothing you can wear it with.
