The Science Of Celsius and Fahrenheit Scale

There are different formulas and different ways of converting temperature from Celsius to Fahrenheit. This conversion is helpful because it helps in the study of whether conditions and also in many other ways in our daily life. In, Europe the Celsius scale was widely used from before, but in other parts of the world the Fahrenheit scale was replaced by the Celsius scale during the mid or to the late of the 20th century. But still now the Fahrenheit scale is used as official scale in countries such as United Sates, Belize and Cayman Islands. In United Kingdom, the Fahrenheit scale was not formally used. It was used was detecting hot whether though Celsius is used for expressing Cold weather. And today in Canada Fahrenheit scale is used along with Celsius Scale. Origin of Celsius

 The Celsius scale was named after Andres Celsius (1701-1744), who was a Swedish astronomer. He created a temperature scale in which 0 degree was the boiling point of water and 100 degree was the freezing point. Around similar times there were other physicist who independently made similar scale but reverse of Celsius’s scale. In this 0 degree was melting point of ice and 100 degree was the boiling point of water. This scale was adopted widely across European continent which was referred to as Centigrade scale. Zero on Celsius scale (0 °C) is defined as being equivalent to 273.15 K, the difference in temperature of 1 deg C is equivalent to the difference of 1 K, which means the size of unit in each scale has to be same. Thus 100 degree boiling point is now 373.15k.

Origin of Fahrenheit

The Fahrenheit scale was named after Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit (1686–1736), he was a German physicist. He was the pioneer of manufacturing thermometers by using mercury in which 0°F is stabilized temperature which equals to the amount of salt, ice and water when mixed. And 96°F is the normal temperature of a person when the thermometer is kept in mouth or in armpit. The difference in temperature of 1°F is the temperature equivalent to difference 0.556°C.

Conversion Process

There are many a process of conversion from Celsius to Fahrenheit and Fahrenheit to Celsius. According to rule of thumb to converse Fahrenheit to Celsius one should subtract 30 from the number obtained in the Fahrenheit and then half the result that is obtained from subtracting. And to converse Celsius to Fahrenheit double the number obtained in the Celsius scale and add 30 to it. Another method that can be used in converting Fahrenheit to Celsius is by subtracting the number obtained in Fahrenheit scale by 32 and multiplying it by 0.5556 or by 5/9. And the temperature from Celsius to Fahrenheit can be obtained by multiplying the result obtained in Celsius by 1.8 or 9/5 and then adding 32 to it.

The Absolute zero of Celsius scale is -273.15 degree Celsius, melting point of ice is 0 degree Celsius, the temperature of Boiling point of the water at 1 atmosphere is 99.9839 °C and temperature of body at normal condition is 37 degree. Whereas the Absolute Zero on a Fahrenheit scale is -459.67°F, the temperature of the Boiling point of the water at 1 atmosphere is 212 degree Fahrenheit and the temperature of body at normal condition in 98.6 degree Fahrenheit. All this can also be obtained by converting Celsius to Fahrenheit and Fahrenheit to Celsius by the above methods only by knowing either of the two temperatures.


The Fahrenheit scale was used for climatic, medical and industrial purposes mainly in the English-speaking countries during the late 1960s and 1970s. The Celsius scale is used in a large amount in the scientific fields and also in many engineering fields. But Most of the people in America are accustomed to Fahrenheit scale. This scale is also used by journalists and broadcasters of United States in forecasting weather conditions and also the equivalent scale in Celsius is given along with it. But in case both the scales are not provided the conversion from Celsius to Fahrenheit or the other way may become useful. It is also used for measuring body temperatures.  And also for many other household purposes these scales are useful like in cooking though the scale which is seen on ovens and also in recipes is the Celsius scale. The Kitchen devices packaging and literature in Canada is marked by both Celsius and Fahrenheit scales. Since the 1970s the United Kingdom uses more of Celsius scale than Fahrenheit scale. In such cases it is important to know the process of converting Celsius to Fahrenheit in case it becomes necessary to know both.
