Dedication and Expertise - How To Excel In Any Career

There are many ways in which a person can excel in their chosen career. Two of the biggest factors of success are dedication and expertise. Dedication and expertise have a strong influence on how far a person goes in their career. Below are some tips on how to excel in any career.

Dedication

Being dedicated to a career is perhaps the best way in which a person can excel in their vocation. There is no substitute for hard work and dedication in life and this has been proven time and time again. The people that are most successful in their careers over time work more productively than those that are not. Many people believe that hard work is the key, but in reality it is productive work is the type that matters. No one in business cares about the hours a person works if they are not producing results. In this time of explosive technology the focus will continue to be on production and not just hours worked.

Expertise

In Malcolm Gladwell’s book, “Outliers” he talks about the ten thousand hour rule. According to his research, a person becomes an expert after ten thousand hours of work on a particular skill. Gladwell credits Bill Gates for his resounding success in part to the fact that he had access to a computer at the age of 13, which was quite rare in those days. He was able to spend thousands of hours before becoming an adult tinkering with the new technology before almost anyone else could. This became a huge advantage for Bill Gates later on in his career. The best way to increase expertise in a field or subject is to simply practice. Another example would be the training required for doctors, like those at Mercy Hospital, Physicians put in years of training to become experts in their specialization.

Passion

Many people will spend the vast majority of their waking hours at work, and it is important to find passion, purpose and value in what you do. In today’s economy, it is much easier than ever before to change careers no matter what a person’s age is. There are people in their 40’s and 50’s who have decided to completely change what they are doing to something they are more passionate about and find more purpose in. Finding a career you are passionate about can mean a world of difference. Passion will help to fuel you on the path to success.
