Once you are done with college and you’ve landed your first job, you can let out a big sigh of relief knowing that you’re on the right track. That said, you want to be sure that you can live up to the expectations you set during your job interview, and you want to really thrive in this new job. No one expects you to learn the ropes immediately, but you definitely don’t want to give yourself too much slack. If there is room for growth in this job, then you want to show your superiors from the very start that you plan to move at a brisk and steady pace. Here is how to prepare for your first job out of college.
Buy the Right Attire
You may have dressed the part when you went to your interview, but now you’re going to need to dress the part on a daily basis. If you don’t yet have the money to buy enough clothes to wear to work on a daily basis, then you’re going to need to find cheaper alternatives that don’t appear to be much cheaper. Shopping second hand in well-to-do neighborhoods is often a great way to find great deals on quality clothes. Or you can find online retailers who will sell you professional looking clothes at a fraction of the price.
Create Healthy Routines
You don’t want to be showing up every morning to your new job looking tired and hungry. You should be giving yourself enough time in the morning to eat a healthy breakfast, and you should be bright-eyed and bushy-tailed when you interact with your colleagues. If you appear to be falling apart, you won’t last very long. So make sure you create some healthy routines by maintaining a decent sleep schedule, a healthy diet, and get plenty of exercise when you can.
Research Your Company Thoroughly
If you want to be on your A-game, then you’re going to need to know the history of your company, and you’ll want to know how that history led to the state that the company is in today. If the company is trying to rebrand or if it has a specific mission statement that underlies everything that you do, then you definitely need to know what that is. The more you know about the business, its owners, and your colleagues (in regard to their professional history), the better you will be at your job.
Buy All the Necessary Supplies
Your company may provide you with a laptop and other office supplies, but they may not. Either way, you want to be sure that you ask your boss exactly what you will be provided with and what you will need on your first day of work. There’s nothing more embarrassing than showing up on your first day and not having the tools that you need to get the job done. If you went to one of UC’s respiratory therapist schools, then you will probably start working in one of their on-campus medical facilities. But you shouldn’t assume that you will be provided with your own stethoscope or lab coat.
