In Malcolm Gladwell’s book, “Outliers” he talks about the ten thousand hour rule. According to his research, a person becomes an expert after ten thousand hours of work on a particular skill. Gladwell credits Bill Gates for his resounding success in part to the fact that he had access to a computer at the age of 13, which was quite rare in those days. He was able to spend thousands of hours before becoming an adult tinkering with the new technology before almost anyone else could. This became a huge advantage for Bill Gates later on in his career. The best way to increase expertise in a field or subject is to simply practice. Another example would be the training required for doctors, like those at Mercy Hospital, Physicians put in years of training to become experts in their specialization.
Passion
Many people will spend the vast majority of their waking hours at work, and it is important to find passion, purpose and value in what you do. In today’s economy, it is much easier than ever before to change careers no matter what a person’s age is.
