If your kitchen could do with a facelift, but you don’t want to go through the hassle and expense of a complete re-fit, then take a look at these top tips for modernising your kitchen on a budget and transform your space without breaking the bank. It’s astonishing how a few simple touches and tweaks can completely change the look and feel of a room space.
Update your cupboards
If your cupboards are a little old but still solid then you could try changing or painting the doors. If you opt for paint, make sure you prime the doors well; it’s much easier if you remove them, clean, sand and paint before you re-fit them. To give your kitchen a unique edge you could get bespoke cupboard doors made in practically any design or material you like.
For a cheaper alternative, cover your existing doors in vinyl. Modern white looks great and will instantly lighten most spaces or, to add a bit more sunshine to your space, choose citrus hues like bright yellow and orange.
An even quicker and easier option is swapping traditional or dull door handles for something more modern. Slick silver handles will update the space, whereas ornate, traditional handles will add character to a country kitchen.
Re-fit your worktop
If you do have a little flex in the budget left over from clever planning, try splashing out on a new worktop. Swap boring Formica with something a little classier like granite, marble or even polished concrete. A dazzling worktop can elevate your kitchen into an extra special space and make a budget kitchen look like a million dollars.
Change the basics
To change the look of your kitchen without removing the units, try changing the flooring, tiling or paint colour and swap your old storage units for something more stylish.
If your units are in good condition then update the walls instead with a lick of paint or a change of tiles and choose new flooring and accessories to match. For an ultra-modern look, try reflective black tiles and team with a black and white chequered floor and black and white accessories. Make sure your white goods blend in with complementary colours, like black Beko washing machines or a black American style fridge. This set-up will provide plenty of light, since black shiny tiles will act like a mirror and throw light back into the room.
