Long haul lorry driving is a fantastic profession.
You’ll be able to see miles of the countryside in the comfort and privacy of your own truck, whilst getting the chance to visit numerous towns and cities in one day.
But sometimes during a long journey, the time might not pass as quickly as you’d like so you’ll need to think of some ways to keep your mind busy.
Here are a few tips that will help lorry drivers beat the boredom whilst still driving safely:
Sugar free gum
Most people tend to eat more when they’re bored, but rather than tucking into chocolate and crisps every few hours,
sugar free gum is a great way to trick the brain into thinking you’re eating.
It’ll also keep your mouth busy and tastes good too!
Audio books
Obviously you can’t read a book whilst driving; however you can still become immersed in a fantastic novel by listening to an audio book.
There are audio books about almost any subject imaginable, whether it’s fiction or non-fiction – you can even read the bible if you like!
Books are a great way to pass the time and before you know it, you’ll have covered hundreds of miles and might even be in a completely different country!
Listening to an audio book will also get the imagination going so is great for the mind.
Exercise
Sitting in a truck for several hours every day may not provide you with the best exercise ever, but you’ll have ample opportunities to get out and stretch the legs.
Park your lorry for half an hour or more and go for a brisk walk around the surrounding area.
Not only will you be able to enjoy some fresh air, but you’ll also be able to get a bit of exercise to keep the weight off.
Whilst driving, try and keep your arms and legs moving as often as possible (whilst concentrating on driving of course),
as being stuck in the same position for a long time can be bad for the body.
Don’t forget to take regular breaks too, even if it’s just for a few minutes.
Music
Listening to the same old music hour after hour can get pretty boring, and the radio can be mind-numbing at times with the repeated songs, jingles and adverts.
So try and find music that you perhaps haven’t heard before to keep your brain thinking and learning new things.
Crete a few playlists before your journey and switch between them as you drive.
Languages
Many people would like to learn a new language but they don’t have the time. But with up to 10 hours in a truck at a time, lorry drivers have no excuse.
There are many language apps available on smartphones such as Busuu and Babbel, so you’ll be able to learn whichever language you want in the comfort of your cabin.
You’ll soon be able to communicate properly in the various countries you visit, which will give you lots of satisfaction.
