You can visit any one of the free beaches by taking the local bus for a nominal fee up the hill and past many of the hotels located in Manual Antonio. Walk into town for a bite to eat and a taste of small town Costa Rica. One note; most everything closes on Sundays. This was a shock for me since most tourist towns stay open for business 7 days a week. Keep an eye out for bouts of heavy rain and vivid lighting during low season months. Daily buses run to Quepos from San Jose.</p>
<h3 style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Playa Potrero</strong></h3>
<p style="text-align: justify;">If the tourist-like vibe of Tamarindo is a bit too much for you take a short trip to Playa Potrero. Snooze on the desolate beach running along the bay or bike through the adjoining communities to get a feel for the area. If you want to get down and party hard Playa Potrero is not the town for you. Be prepared for a sleepy, laid back community of locals and ex pats who prefer to take thing slowly. The Costa Rican Tourism Board notes that the Guanacaste region where Playa Potrero is located offers deep blue waters and a collection of white-sand beaches. Take a private car or a series of buses to Playa Potrero. Traveling here can be a bit challenging but such is life off the radar.</p>
<h3 style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Monteverde</strong></h3>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Monteverde is home to the world famous cloud forest and some of the most stunning landscape views on the face of the earth. The community was settled by pacifist Quakers who fled from the southern United States. You might see toucans, armadillos or the occasional sloth hanging out in the jungle canopy. Enjoy the cool climate, crisp mountain air and friendly people in Monteverde, Costa Rica.</p>
<h3 style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Atenas</strong></h3>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Atenas is a community of locals and expats located about 40 minutes from the capital of San Jose. The rapidly growing town has a lively center with many restaurants, banks and grocery stores. If you want to get a taste of big city living, Costa Rican style, take a short bus ride into San Jose for movies and malls. Dine on local Costa Rican fare, pizza or vegetarian delights to satiate your hunger. Relax in the centrally located park for a few hours. You can people watch or gaze upwards to see hundreds of tropical parrots flit to and fro between the trees.</p>
